was one of those sparkling days that live on one’s memory; a fairly
impromptu gathering of good friends out for adventure in the mountains in
the new air and fresh sunshine of spring. We met up in the Alpine Café
in Betws to sample their outstanding teas, cakes and breakfast – not
many places where you can get such a range of loose leaf teas. The walk
was an uneventful but cheery climb around Idwal from Ogwen cottage, then
on up the steep haul of Y Garn’s west ridge. Doris exhibited the enthusiasm
of a puppy that has yet to learn the signs of a long expedition and led
the way. Terry’s knitting had an outing half way up, such was the
benevolence of the weather. Surprisingly there were still drifts of snow
on the summit. The route down took us through Devil’s kitchen where
Doris threatened to break a leg or worse, so had to be held under tight
control. Climbers were out practising on Idwal slabs as we passed beneath,
and Tara gracefully practised T’ai Chi from a rock promontory. Richard
called ahead to book us into Caban, the new restaurant in Brynrefail near
Llanberis, at the west end of Llyn Padarn. They were having a special evening
of Passover festival food, which none of us had eaten before, so we had
an interesting time eating such delicacies as Kevelta fish. The restaurant
turned out to be very promising, and one to which we will return. Return
