| The
days before this walk were the wettest and coolest of the summer so far,
with a deluge and gales. Consequently we were on the point of calling off
this walk several times. However, Regina’s brother and his family
were over from the States, and opportunities were few for us all to get
out together and experience the glories of walking in Wales, so we decided
to go whatever the weather. Fortune favours the brave, it seems. Not only
did the winds abate, the rains suspend and the sun break through, but the
visibility was hightened, offering clearly defined views over the Vale of
Clwyd. This also turned out to be our highest turnout of the year, with
ten of us and Doris setting off from Bwlch Pen Barras to climb through the
woods on the eastern flanks of the Clwydian hills towards Moel Famau. Interesting
discussions were had with the Americans on a range of topical matters, and
Doris was ecstatic with a group of energetic teenagers to entertain. On
the summit we encountered a team who had lugged a pool table up in order
to have a charity game. Once back at Pen Barras we headed for Ruthin. The
Ruthin craft centre restaurant is really a fine place, and our long table
for ten in the centre of the room proved a perfect conclusion to our day
out. The food lived up to its reputation, with burgers proving a hit with
both locals and visitors, and interesting aubergine wraps for us veggies.
Puddings went down well too, bread and butter pud in competition with the
scones for best home made fodder. The twenty pound tip (American influence)
impressed everyone, including the deserving waitress; a nice end to the
event. Return to Home Page |
