Glyderau Walk, March 2011

Our walk started from the Pen Y Gwryd (PYG) hotel, after a hearty breakfast. I’ve stayed there before a few times and I really like it. The owners are unusual in sticking to an idiosyncratic tradition, quite assertive and akin to an older style of hotel keeping. Although the hotel lacks many modern conveniences, it is run with a collegiate and trusting ethos, fitting, I feel, for the mountain walking fraternity. In any event, no TVs, mobile signal or internet access is a virtue in my book. We climbed to the summit of Glyder Fach following the intake wall, and the weather improved as we gained height. Despite the chill wind on the summit, it was sunny and clear and we played on the cantilever stone, before ambling down to gaze at the magnificent architecture of Castell y Gwynt. Despite its name (castle of the winds) it was strangely calm in the vicinity of the rocks, and we lingered there awhile. Later we reached the rocky spires of Glyder Fawr, by which time the wind had picked up, causing us to shelter in the lee of the summit. We descended to Pen y pass, diverted for a moment by a fracas between the dogs; after détente was established we carried on down the road to the hotel for a very welcome beer. Dinner was preceded by a deep hot bath, one of the finest features of the PYG experience. Return to the Home Page.
