| We
set out on this warm spring day for a walk before lunch. John, approaching
his 86th birthday, suggested that we head for Moel Famau summit. Starting
from Bwlch Penbarras, we began the climb wondering if the new hip would
be up to the job. It certainly was, and, doggedly heaving his wheelie frame
over rocks and heather, he arrived at the top to the applause and handshakes
of admiring fellow walkers. We shared a few cans of ginger beer that our
hero had stashed away in his rucksack. We admired the far reaching views,
listening to our man of the hills recount Highland and Yorkshire expeditions
from younger days. The descent proved tricky at first with the wheelie,
but once more determination won out. We arrived back exhausted and hungry
(lunch was postponed for this epic jaunt) but proud to be in John's company
that day. Fortune favours the brave. Shiela not only walked the mountain
with us but also hunted out our supper upon our return. Bravo. Return
